Article as appeared in the National
Enquirer: Gayla Crain is a bubbly bundle of blonde hair,
blue eyes and girl-next-door good looks- and pound for pound she's
the strongest woman in the world.
The petite
21-year old wonder woman from Shawnee, Okla, tipped the scales at
132 pounds last
year while she amazed the world by lifting an incredible 407 pounds.
In 1980 she shattered 28 world power-lifting records. She is now the
current U.S. champion in the 123-pound class.
"I'm no
muscle-bound freak." curvaceous Gayla told the Enquirer." "I just
like to hoist those big weights.
"I could lift
even more if I increased my weight. But I'm a woman. I'm
ultra-feminine. I don't want to be a behemoth. I'm a girl first and
a power lifter second.

It's perfectly normal to express your uniqueness as
long as you don't hurt anyone else)
"Because of the way I
look-5 feet 4 and trim-nobody can believe that I hold all these
power-lifting records. I guess if i were 6 feet 4 and weighed 300
pounds they'd believe me."
Gayla comes by her
Amazon-like strength naturally. Her father, Don Crain, 54, holds
three world lifting records for men over 50. Her brother Rickey 27,
is a world power-lifting champion and another brother Randy, 26,
(above picture far right) is a South Dakota state power-lifting
champ.
Although Gayla has been
married for 2 years, she uses her maiden name in lifting
competition. Her husband is Rod Dixon, a 21 year old student.
Last year, she won the
U.S. title by hoisting a hefty 396 pounds.
Pat Malone, head coach
for the U.S. team at the world power-lifting championships last
year, said: "Gayla has headed the list of the top 50 women lifters
around the world for the past year.
"She is the strongest
woman in the world, pound-for-pound."
Dr.Terry Todd, Ph.D.
spokesman for the National Strength Research Center at Auburn, Univ.
in Alabama, agreed: "A few other women lifters, weighing much more
than Gayla, have lifted more. But pound-for-pound, Gayla is the
strongest."
